Wood Floor Sanding FAQs

Answers to Common Questions About Wood Floor Sanding, Restoration & Finishing

At Axholme Floor Care, we’re often asked similar questions about wood floor sanding, dust, finishes and timescales. Below you’ll find clear, honest answers to help you understand the process and decide what’s right for your floor.

Is wood floor sanding really dust-free?

We use professional dust-controlled sanding equipment that captures the vast majority of dust at source. While no sanding process is 100% dust-free, disruption is kept to an absolute minimum and far cleaner than traditional sanding methods.

How long does wood floor sanding take?

Most residential floor sanding projects take 1–2 days, depending on the size of the area, the condition of the floor and the finish chosen. Larger properties, parquet floors or floors requiring repairs may take longer.

Can all wood floors be sanded?

Not all floors are suitable. Solid wood floors and most parquet floors can usually be sanded multiple times. Engineered wood floors can often be sanded, but this depends on the thickness of the wear layer. We always assess the floor first and give honest advice.

What’s the difference between oil and lacquer finishes?

  • Hardwax oil penetrates the wood and gives a natural matt or satin appearance. It’s easy to maintain and repair.

  • Lacquer forms a protective surface coating and is more durable, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.

We’ll help you choose the best option based on how the room is used and the look you want.

What is a 2-pack lacquer and when is it needed?

A 2-pack (two-component) lacquer is a heavy-duty finish designed for areas with high foot traffic or commercial use. It offers greater resistance to wear, spills and scuffs than standard single-component lacquers.

What sheen levels do you offer?

We offer a range of sheen levels to suit your preference, including:

  • Ultra-matt

  • Matt

  • Satin

  • Gloss

The sheen level affects the final appearance of the floor but not the quality of protection.

Do you carry out floor repairs and gap filling?

Yes. We can carry out minor floor repairs, replace damaged sections where possible and fill gaps as part of the sanding process. This helps improve both the appearance and performance of the finished floor.

Will sanding remove scratches and old finishes?

Yes. Sanding removes old coatings, surface scratches and uneven areas. Deeper damage can often be reduced significantly, though very deep marks may still be faintly visible — we’ll always explain what can realistically be achieved.

How soon can I walk on the floor after sanding?

Light foot traffic is usually possible after 2-4 hours, depending on the finish used. Full curing times vary between oils and lacquers, and we’ll provide clear aftercare advice once the job is complete.

How do I maintain my floor after sanding?

Maintenance depends on the finish:

  • Oiled floors benefit from regular cleaning with suitable products and occasional re-oiling.

  • Lacquered floors require minimal maintenance beyond routine cleaning.

We provide tailored aftercare guidance for every floor.
