Engineered Oak Floor Sanding & Hardwax Oil Finish in Scunthorpe

Project type

Engineered Wood Floor Sanding & Hardwax Oil Finish

Date

February 16

Location

Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire

This engineered oak floor in Scunthorpe had become worn and the protective finish had started to break down after years of everyday use. As the coating deteriorated, the floor became harder to clean, allowing dirt to settle into the grain and leaving the surface looking dull and tired. The original finish had faded and light surface scratching was visible across the boards.
Fortunately, this particular engineered floor had a generous 5mm solid oak wear layer, making it well suited to professional sanding and refinishing. While the timber itself remained in good condition, the worn surface required careful restoration to bring the floor back to life.
The restoration began with a controlled sanding process using professional dust-controlled equipment to remove the old finish and level the surface. For the main sanding stages, a professional belt sanding machine was used. This type of machine is designed to efficiently remove the worn finish and surface damage while keeping the floor flat and even across the entire area.
Once the old coating and surface wear had been removed, the floor was then refined using a rotary sanding machine. Rotary sanders are used during the final sanding stages to smooth the timber and remove the finer scratches left by the earlier sanding passes. This process helps produce a much more even and consistent surface ready for finishing.
Throughout the sanding process the floor was worked through progressively finer abrasives, starting with a lower grit to remove the old finish and gradually moving to higher grits to refine the timber. This staged sanding method ensures the floor surface becomes smoother at each step, creating the ideal foundation for the final finish.
Once the floor had been fully prepared, it was finished using a high-quality hardwax oil. This type of finish enhances the natural grain and colour of engineered oak while providing durable protection suitable for everyday living. The final result is a clean, natural-looking floor with a warm matte appearance and long-lasting protection.

The Floor Condition

This oak floor in Grimsby had previously been treated with a dark Danish oil, which had built up over time and significantly darkened the natural colour of the wood. The finish had become uneven in places, leaving the floor looking dull and tired.

Sanding & Preparation

To restore the floor properly, a full sanding process was carried out using professional dust-controlled equipment. The old finish was carefully removed using a progressive sanding sequence to bring the timber back to a clean, even surface. Edges and corners were detailed to ensure a consistent finish across the entire floor.

The Finished Result

Once prepared, the floor was finished using a high-quality hardwax oil. This provided a much lighter, more natural appearance while enhancing the grain of the wood and offering durable, long-lasting protection.
